News
October 2011Great news. The well at Elizabeth House is nearly finished. The men have had to dig down 60ft to reach the water level and are now putting the pipes in.The road is now graded so we are all very happy. Today we had roasted goat to celebrate - we sang and danced,

What a blessing to return to see my family at E/House so happy and relaxed. I always have to thank God for the goodness and loving care He takes of these precious children. We have 3 new ones join us Henry, Susan and Hanifer; they all have their different problems but have settled in and are happy.
We have all so have additions to our family - 4 pigs and 3 turkeys - the children love them. This is a project to bring in a little money and also the bigger boys are learning to care for them, cleaning the pig pen and fetching grass to make up the food.
As you know, children grow up, some of them are now in their late teens, so we are trying to prepare them for when they have to leave us. Most of them will be returning to the village, so we thought it would be good to teach them how to look after the goats, pigs and turkeys. The older girls help in the houses, the kitchen and with the younger children. We are also teaching them to use the knitting machine, and Joseph has made a jumper.
I do want to thank the staff for all their hard work and the great love they have for the children. Without them this work would not be possible.

All the building work on the new house is finished, it now needs to be furnished and painted. The boys are very excited and can't wait to move in!! I am hoping it will not be long. I must say here a very big THANK YOU to the builder, it has been built to a high standard and also to Rev. Sarah who has been overseeing the work. We are so grateful to God for this great work and his provision. As you may know, we started this project with £50 pounds. You will delighted to know that this term we have got 4 new children, 2 girls and 2 boys. Linda has left us and has gone home to her family, we felt very strongly that she should move back into the community and hopeful she will be able to use her knitting machine to earn some income. We now have a knitting machine at Elizabeth house and Joseph has knitted himself a jumper which he will not take off in case some one takes it!!! My thanks to the staff that care and love the children.

The children have returned to Elizabeth House to begin a new term and seem very happy to be back.
Linda has finished her knitting machine course at the Adult Learning Centre and is the proud owner of a knitting machine bought for her by a parent at Lache School,Chester. Linda is now living at David and Val's house with Florence in one of the boys' quarters. Linda can manage most things herself but Florence is there if she needs her. They have become such good friend and laughter often can be heard coming from their sitting room.
Linda is going to an Orthopaedic Hospital on Thursday to see if anything can be done to stop her neck shaking and to improve her mobility. She cannot walk because of a club foot.

A parent from Lache School Chester UK has promised to buy Linda a knitting machine. THANK YOU. When Linda’s skills improve it is hoped she will be able to make school jumpers and other items.
For some time we have been thinking of a project that Linda and other young people can meaningfully participate in. We sometimes forget that some of them are 20 years old and need to continue to develop their independent learning skills.
At last we have found an activity that they can benefit from. Linda and Auntie Jane are attending Adult Learning classes here in Mukono for three days a week where they are learning how to use a knitting machine. Linda is doing very well and has learnt to thread a needle, a skill she found difficult.
We are badly in need of two more machines to teach more of our young people this valuable skill.

A Day at Elizabeth House
It was a joy to return to friends at Elizabeth House. As you can imagine a warm welcome was given by the children and staff and it was not long before we felt at home. Hilary remembered our visit last year by pointing to the swings and then to me. At break time the children challenged us to a game of football. The enthusiasm of Hilary, Henry, Joseph, Saturday Junior, Immaculate and Comfort left our skills much to be desired but it was all good fun. We were encouraged enthusiastically by the spectators.
The water activity in the afternoon was enjoyed by all. Nicolas had one objective in mind; to splash us. He succeeded.
The children and young people are keen to learn and develop. This willingness to learn, commitment of staff and support of friends worldwide is evident: the children are a credit to themselves and all involved.
It was exciting to witness the progress of the new “boys” house and to be able to contribute £400 from Lache Primary School Chester

Silence was broken at Elizabeth House today as some of the children returned from holiday it was so good to see their smiling faces again and of course their little eyes were every where, what was new ,how far have they got with the new house.Joseph was delighted to tell me that he was going to sleep in the new house, so come on folks a lot more to be done, wont you make Joseph's dream come true. Over the holiday Billy has made the place look smart painting where needed.
It is my joy to let you know that money is coming in slowly for the house, yesterday we were given 1,000 pounds to buy bricks. Many thanks go to dear Betty, who works hard for both Hidden Treasure and Elizabeth House. Shall I let you into a secret ? Betty cleans her church and gives us her wages.
God is so faithful and we are trusting him to finish this house by the end of the year.
3 May 2010 (from our latest newsletter)
You will be pleased to hear that the children have had a good term. Joel held a course for local teachers and the teachers of Hidden Treasure School called ‘Knowing and Understanding Learning Disability’. It was received very well and he was asked to do another. We have also started once a month meetings with the parents and guardians of local children. These have also been well received and will be an ongoing feature of our community work.
You will be pleased that we have started the boys’ house and we have nearly finished the foundation and floors. We are having to stop as we have used all the available money. The boys are very excited at having a house of their own. If you want to help why not buy a brick at 20p each?
The children are preparing to go home for their holiday. Some do not want to go and would rather stay with us. Many will return to homes where they are not wanted but we feel the parents and guardians must take their responsibility for their child.
Thank you again to the staff for looking after the children and loving them so much.
27 April 2010
The children are going home tomorrow for 2 weeks holiday: they are very much looking forward to it. But we shall be glad to have every one back as Elizabeth Centre will be very quiet with all the children away. However we will make the most of the time to get repairs done.
23 April 2010
We started a programme of meetings for parents/guardians of children and youths with disabilities from surrounding communities of Nangwa village, Namuyenjje village and Kiwugo. Nine parents/guardians attended and sat in three focused group discussions. They discussed topics such as: What causes disabilities? How do you tell that the person has a disability? How can a person prevent disabilities? Also the roles that various groups of people could play in reducing disability. The parent's discussed how they could encourage others to visit Elizabeth House for training on how they could pass on what they had learned. A representative was appointed to be a temporary contact between the parents and Elizabeth House.
January 2010
We face many new challenges this year. The children are growing up and changes need to be made. At the moment we have 19 children who are resident and a new boy named Saturday is to join us. He has been living on the streets of Kampala because his mother and father have died. Also, he has epilepsy so please pray for him. The children are such a delight and encouragement to be with, always happy and full of life.
We now have contact with the local Primary School, whom we have visited, and they have been and joined in some activities with us. Like all villages, there are many children or young people with disabilities, so this year we are planning to start a work among the families. Our aim is to invite parents, guardians etc. to Elizabeth House once a month where we shall try and encourage them and teach them basics of how to care for their children. These parents are carrying a big burden as they have no help; they are shunned by the local community and even their own families.
One of our big requirements is that we need to build accommodation for the boys, as they are now growing up and at the moment they are sharing a house with the girls. Also we are having more boys wanting to come but we don't have the accommodation for them.
Oh! I forgot to mention that we have 3 new residents join our family - a family of goats! They are Billy, Rita and Elizabeth and we are expecting an increase to the family very soon! They are loved by the children and they chose the names.
